We have an active Ladies’ Section with over 50 playing members and a Ladies’ Academy section to support ladies taking up the challenge of learning to play golf.
June Smith, current Ladies’ Captain is supported by Jaqne Terry, Vice Captain, and a committee of volunteers who willingly give up their time to help manage the Ladies’ Section. They are all voted in at the end of March each year.
New members are made very welcome and support is tailored to suit each person’s individual needs and preference.
There is an abundance of opportunities to play competitive and fun golf at PGC and the social side is an important aspect of the Section. We run Trophy competitions, medals, stablefords, foursomes and a variety of fun events, particularly during the winter. We also support and promote 9 hole competitions for those unable to play 18 holes, due to time, physical restraints or personal preference.
Our main competition day is Tuesday morning, but we also have tees available to us on Saturday mornings, when ladies are able to participate in the week’s competition (which is amalgamated with Tuesday’s results) or simply play for pleasure. These slots are actively supported and regularly filled.
During the year we run singles and pairs knockouts for both lower and higher handicap players and we also run summer and winter eclectic competitions.
PGC Ladies participate in several County competitions throughout the season and enter teams in the County Stoneham Cup and Hayling Trophy – County single match play, team competitions. A wonderful team spirit and display of camaraderie is very evident during these matches.
In addition to all these we play numerous ‘friendlies’ against other clubs, both home and away. It’s a lovely way to meet other golfers and play other courses.
The Ladies’ Captain organises several events throughout the year. Captain’s Day is an opportunity to raise money for her chosen charity and indulge in some fun on the course. Last year’s was a beach theme, with various props placed around the course and in the bunkers – including a nudist beach, beached whales, sharks and sandcastles. Fete style indoor games then entertained the ladies before everyone indulged in a fish and chip supper. £335 was raised for the Mind (for better mental health) on the day, which contributed to over £8000 being raised in the year.
The Spring and Autumn Meetings are competitions followed by the presentation of wonderful prizes and a meal – an ideal opportunity to socialise with one another and invite past members. Our Christmas meal, Invitations to men and ladies, Exchange Day with Waterlooville Ladies Section and Away Days to other clubs are further golfing and social opportunities, enjoyed by members.
In November we hold a Coffee Morning, with a Christmas Fair, giving the opportunity for golfers and non golfers to come along, enjoy a coffee and danish and start your Christmas shopping by browsing our numerous stalls. It’s a brilliant opportunity to play our course for a fraction of the normal price and help raise money for the Captains’ charity, which is Pancreatic Cancer UK this year. Ladies and Mixed 4balls are welcome.
